Helping the community
LUCRF Super and the PFA supporting NSW students
The Professional Footballers Australia (PFA), with the support of LUCRF Super, were delighted to extend the unique and increasingly popular Heroes Program to Western Sydney earlier this year.
The program encourages students from disadvantaged backgrounds to connect with prominent Australian A-League Footballers, to promote leadership and fair-play values within the community.
LUCRF Super has been pleased to learn that two new schools, including St Clair High School and Colyton High School, have just completed their 6th session in the 10 session mentoring program.
Led by over 38 mentors, the PFA Heroes Program not only serves to inspire students but also the players. “It’s been brilliant,” said Liam Reddy, Sydney Football Club Goal Keeper and Heroes Program mentor, when asked about the influence the program has had on the St Clair school community. “It has been the best community initiative I have been involved in since becoming a professional footballer. I’m consistently inspired by the difference mentoring can make to the lives of these students.”
Supporting the PFA Heroes Program has been invaluable for LUCRF Super, which is dedicated to making a positive difference in the communities where its members live and work. In fact, recently Teaching Co-ordinator at St Clair High School, Joe Badrov shared a story about the enhanced level of commitment to work from the students involved in the program.
“We had an unexpected fire drill interrupt our session last week which meant that the kids were forced to leave their Heroes session. By the time the drill was over, it was the end of school and I expected our students to leave for home as they usually would. However, it was fantastic to see that all of the students involved in the PFA Heroes program returned to their session and stayed for an additional 30 minutes to complete their work. They were just so happy to spend the time with the players that they didn’t want to leave.”
LUCRF Super is excited to approach the final weeks of the Sydney Heroes Program where the 2011 Heroes Program concludes with a Football Festival run by students for their community.
