LUCRF Super visits local heroes
LUCRF Super was recently invited to join students from Keysborough Secondary School and Altona Secondary College for a visit to AAMI Park, Melbourne, through the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Heroes Program.
The Program, which has been proudly supported by LUCRF Super for the last three years, is becoming increasingly popular with students, schools and the broader community. It provides students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with an opportunity to meet A-league Footballers and get to know them on a personal and professional level through a 10 session mentoring program.
The mentors lead students through a series of games, interactive lessons and informal discussions, before participating in a ‘Football Festival’ hosted by students for their school community.
During the AAMI Park visit, students were given informal lectures based on the elements of success and living a healthy lifestyle. The lectures were led by Francis Awaritefe, the Football Director of the Melbourne Victory Football Club and Ola Luczak, Sports Dietician, who both shared stories about the importance of hard work, when it comes to success.
Students also watched a Melbourne Victory team training session, before meeting the players and their new recruit, Harry Kewell. The day then concluded with a special PFA Heroes lesson at AAMI Stadium.
The PFA Heroes Program is now in its 8th session in Victoria and its 9th session in New South Wales. When reflecting on LUCRF Super’s initial visit to Altona Secondary College earlier this year, the difference that this program has made on these students becomes notably clear. Students are more confident, focused and showing stronger signs of leadership and dedication not only towards their school work but also their personal lives. One student, who was asked about her journey as part of the PFA Heroes Program said, “I used to be really immature but ever since I’ve participated in this program, I’ve never felt more mature and responsible.”
This feedback highlights LUCRF Super’s commitment to making a positive and meaningful difference in the communities where our members live and work. The PFA Heroes Program challenges young students to look beyond the now, and think outside the square. They are encouraged to strive to become their best and dedicate themselves to their education, families and communities so that they can become excellent role models.
LUCRF Super is looking forward to the upcoming Football Festival held by students later in 2011.
