Faces of LUCRF
Will Hastie
It has been 10 years since Will Hastie, Manager Player Services and Community for the Professional Football Australia (PFA) and LUCRF Super member, put on his football boots professionally.
But when the opportunity to take part in a testimonial match in Ireland came knocking, Will jumped at the chance.
After a 10 year playing career, in which he represented Australia at both ‘Joey’ and Under 20 levels, Will also served a football apprenticeship with Celtic FC and spent 6 years playing professionally at a number of clubs in the United Kingdom before returning home to Australia to play for the Gippsland Falcons.
“When I ended my professional football career I didn't think it would be possible for my son Patrick, who turns 8 in November, to ever see me play in a place that was very special to my career - Sligo, Ireland, where I have many fond memories playing for the Sligo Rovers Football Club.
“So, when my good friend Gerry Carr called this year and asked me to take part in the match, I couldn't say no,” said Will.
The match, which was part of celebrations for Sligo Rovers legend, and Will’s former teammate, Gerry Carr, also featured the present day Sligo team, who played a match as part of the Europa League. Will and the other veterans then kitted up a few days later for the testimonial against the great Manchester United.
“Whilst the Sligo veterans, which was mostly made up of our team of 1994, managed a 4-1 victory and I caught up with former team mates I had not seen for 14 years, nothing could have made me more pleased than seeing Patrick sitting in the stands on my Dad's knee watching the game,” said Will.
Young Patrick was even lucky enough to wear the Sligo jumper, walk out with the teams and play on the hallowed 'Showgrounds' turf with other local kids at half time.
“It was an experience that money can't buy and one that I know he'll remember for many years to come.”
Now working for the PFA, Will says while he misses playing, he relishes being involved in the management side of the business, with the PFA being a great vehicle for facilitating and educating young players on a range of things, including superannuation.
