Spouse contributions
Did you know that you can contribute into the super account of your spouse? If your spouse is not working or is on a low income, you may be able to claim a tax rebate on your contribution.
There is no limit on the amount you can contribute into your spouse’s account, but the rebate only applies for the first $3,000 you contribute each year. The maximum rebate you can get is $540 (18%). To be eligible for the full rebate, your spouse must be earning less than $10,800. A reduced rebate is available if your spouse earns less than $13,800 a year.
For the purposes of the rebate, a spouse includes a person who although not legally married to you, lives with you in a bona fide domestic basis as your husband or wife. It does not include a person who lives separately and apart from you on a permanent basis.
