Partner profile

'The Cottage' is an initiative of the Sisters of Charity in conjunction with St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and serves as a hospital in a home-style environment for those who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Short-term health care and support is provided in a safe and responsive environment, allowing for a smoother transition back into the community following hospitalisation.

The LUCRF Super Community Program provided support for the purchase of a bariatric wheelchair and bed to assist with the transport of a growing number of obese patients.

The support from the Community Program has:

  • Enabled The Cottage to accept more referrals
  • Increased the number of patients The Cottage can admit and discharge
  • Improved patient care and mobility
  • Improved occupational health and safety for staff
  • Allowed for patient recovery in an environment conducive to their wellbeing
  • Improved the sleeping routines of patients with circulatory and respiratory issues
  • Reduced pain for patients with broken bones, and
  • Given a sense of independence to those who previously required around-the-clock assistance.

Gary’s story

Gary was a patient at The Cottage who had obesity and chronic respiratory issues. Previously, he always required assistance adjusting standard beds and often he fell out of them and woke up on the floor. Built for his size, the bariatric bed and wheelchair meant Gary no longer had to wait for a staff member to assist him and he no longer worried about waking up on the floor.

Lesley’s story

Lesley was a patient at The Cottage who was experiencing a lot of pain from his broken ribs. The bariatric chair supported his back so well that the pressure was taken away from his ribs, keeping them in an upright posture and reducing his pain. He explained that he was so comfortable in the chair that he actually fell asleep in it while watching television.
